Inference and Character Traits

We've practiced inferring traits/characteristics based on characters' actions and words all week. Now you get to show off your new skills!

DIRECTIONS:

* Read the selection below

* Use our Post-It Process to:

A. Identify a trait of the father

B. Give evidence (actions and/or words)

C. Explain:

1. Give a definition of your trait

2. Show how the examples ties into your definition

D. Challenge: Based on this trait, explain what might be important to the father and how you figured this out.

Do You Want Fries with That?

by Sharron A. Scott

“And would you like fries with that, m’am?” my father asked cheerfully. “Well, it would actually be cheaper if you got the value meal.”

He was working the drive through that day, and in my opinion, he was just a little too cheerful about it. You would have thought he had gotten promoted to vice president of the Burger World, or at least to manager. But no, this man, who happened to be my father, was excited about working the drive through.

My father, who is a dead ringer for Ned Flanders, has been working with me at Burger World for the past three weeks, since he lost his job at the Black Cola distribution plant. He started working there as a temporary driver right after he got out of the army and worked his way up to manager. This man, who used to be somebody’s boss, is now dishing out fries alongside his 17‐year‐old daughter.

He works from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. I work from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 pm. I catch the bus to Burger World from school, then my father and I ride home together in his 1999 Toyota minivan. Ouch! I am doomed to be a social outcast forever. It will be a miracle if I get a date to the prom.

a trait to describe her dad is determan my evidence is that once her dad was a boss but than he had to look for another job so he was determan enough to go out in look for one even though he has to work his way up, in definition of my trait is even though you may lose you still keep tryin to complete a goal this ties in my example because he kelp going in something that was important was geting promoted.

The father is greatful.to be happy for what you have. I think this because even though he was manager at a company and now he is servingg burgers he seems to be just happy to have a job. This shows that hes just happy to have a job and that hes grateful for what he has and not for what he has lost. This is important because you never know how life will turn out and that there are some people who don't have jobs and i think he knows that he is lucky to have a job.I figured this out from his attitude and how hapopy he was in the text to be running the drive thru.

A. Appreciative
B."But no, this man, who happend to be my father, was excited to work about working the drive through."
C. Appreciative is the state of showing appreciation or grattitude of something you've received and her father has shown this by being cheerful at the job he's working. Although its with his 17 year old daughter at a fast food restaurant he shows happiness instead of complaining.
D.The act of being a man and a father is part of providing for your family and thats what is important to her father. He went from a driving job to a whack restaurant job but as long as it is a job and he didnt give up on getting a job he appreciates the money he does get to provide for his family.

A. A trait of the father is he is grateful.
B. He is grateful because he seems to be happy to be working beside his daughter, even though it's not that good of a job.
C. Grateful means that you appreciate what you have, the father is showing appreciation when he smiles for doing a job that no one else wants. He's appreciating the fact that he for one has a job, and on top of that he is working with his daughter. To see his daughters' face to him must be a blessing.

Trait: A good trait of the father would be Grateful.
Evidence: He's happy to have a job at all, even if he is working at a fast food restaurant drive-thru. He's grateful.
Explanation: Most people would complain about having that job, most people do. Minimum wage, rude customers, and it's not really anyone's passion or dream to work at a cheap fast food drive-thru. No one really ever appreciates the fact that they at least have a job at all, while some people can't get a job for anything in the world and can't afford to feed their families, would kill for that job.
Grateful: When you're grateful, you're appreciative for anything and everything you have and get. You know the true value of a dollar. You know how lucky you are have the little amount of things that you do have. The father is grateful for even having a job and being able to earn a living to feed his family.
Challenge: The father's family seems important to him because he will do anything for them. No matter how humiliating or shameful. Whatever keeps food on the table and a roof over their heads, he'll do it. He went from being on top, and in charge, to working in a drive-thru. That's got to be degrading in some way, but he does what he has to. To keep his family safe and happy.

I would describe the father as a "proundful" father the reason why is that he worked at the drive through at burger world so he feels that he should be proud for having a job.also he is just being thankful for what he has but he wants to be grateful.
